Training for Week

Looking for another 200km week this week in sunny Hobart. 130kms registered on the weekend and another 60 during the week with two 30km rides to Granton. Yesterday did the Strickland Avenue climb up to Fern Tree for another 20odd Kms. So target achieved.

Starting to think about carrying stuff on the bike. Not sure a pannier is the go and considering a small backpack. Happy to take advice on this.

Advice from two posted blogs is for the download of gps maps to phone. May get worth a try.

A nice well written piece from a keen biker who has travelled many km's around Korea including the big one to Busan.

Cycling in Korea

The Link goes to a blog by Jan Boostra and dates back to 2011 as the last update, but it does give some idea of what riding in Korea is like.

Tour de Busan - Weather characteristics for Daegu in April

Preparation for the long ride needs to consider the weather and for reference I have a link to weather forecasts for Daegu (which is around the half way mark to Busan).

According to the last 10 years records Daegu's weather towards the end of April is on average cool (10-18deg C)  which is not bad for cycling.

Asian Dust is another risk we need to consider, however looking at the timeseries charts for Daegu it was pretty low last year late April. Forecasts will start to be posted from March on the following website.

Black Hanky Boys Tour de Busan

The much talked about Tour de Busan is getting closer to realization in 2014. The challenge is a 560km ride from Seoul to Busan (or vice versa) along the new four rivers dam project. The dates are firming up from the 19th April to the 22nd April. That gives us about 10-11 weeks to prepare and get the mind and body into shape for this endurance event comprising 8 x 70km sessions over 4 days or 140km/day. Danny has committed with the acquisition of a new high spec Chris Boardman AR9.4 bike.  Sean will need to unpack the Trek and get onto the gym bikes for  winter training. John will need to drop a few kg and get out on those Melbourne bikeways !

Will be getting the blog up to date with resources and information links in the coming days. Access is open to the BHB team so feel free to add your piece.

According to the Telegraph the bike does matter and it needs to be a Boardman!

BHB training camp Phuket

The Phuket training camp started on Saturday 12th with a light ride over to Patong for me and Danny did some loops of the Kata-Karon loop.
On Sunday we took off for Suring beach via Patong and Kamala. The hills to Patong were sharp reminder of what was to follow. The Kamala hill climb proved too much for an uninterrupted ascent and apit stop at the small Gasoline humpy was made and use of their table and chairs for some water and recovery.
Next section of the ride was the downhill into Kamala and the suberbly picturesque ride around the coast to Surin beach. Another pit stop for morning tea at the Surin Cafe, who are well used to sweaty riders coming in for R+R.
We decied to continue to Laguna Beach and tackle the fist 10 km or so of the Laguna Triathlon bike course. The hills were killers and the initial three step rise out of Laguna was tough. But nothing was so tough as the short ride up the long climb out of Anderman white sands and the subsequent long hill.
We then took a ride through some rubber plantations and be lined it back to Kata beach by riding down through the middle of the island.
We met a group of riders and followed them for 15-20km before losing them at the lights and making a final quick stop at a seven eleven for gatorade and carbohydrate.
All energy was spent and needed a good late lunch at club med to feel human again.
Total ride approx 100km
Elapsed time was almost 5 hours

Phuket training camp 12-15th September

The team training camp will be held in Phuket from 12-14th September, based out of the Club Med Resort at Karon Beach.

The biking will be an intensive three half days of riding including a partial ride over the Triathlon course. Other challenging rides will include a trip over to Rawai beach for breakfast which features the spectacular and steep hill climb out of Kata up to the lookout.
Tips for bike preparation
- always carry two bottles
- make sure the bike bags are well padded for air travel and handling
- it is usually best to remove the front and back wheels from the frame for travel
- bring at least one spare tube and set of levers
- I will bring a foot pump and a small clip on portable pump (so no need to bring)
